His Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary

Source: Google Books

Saint Ferdinand III, king of León and Castile, died on May 30, 1252, and was buried before the image of the Blessed Virgin in the great church of Seville.

This predestined man gave his soldiers and his people the example of every virtue. His trust in the help of the Blessed Virgin Mary was without limits. On the battlefield, an Image of the Mother of God was always carried before the armies, so that the sight of it might fill the soldiers with ardor, confidence, and hope of victory.

Besides this Image, the king also wore a small one himself on his chest, and he hung it from the pommel of his saddle when he went into battle.

Mary made her servant victorious over the Moors, and Ferdinand gave her his thanks before the celebrated Image still seen in Seville, and venerated under the name of Our Lady of the Kings.
